The Making of Mr Brown

THE Business IDEA

As the sister restaurant to the much loved Francis, Mr Brown is a neighbourhood grill and smokehouse, inspired by a variety of cuisines from all over the world; but always with one thing in common, honesty and comfort.

THE Design PROCESS

For this project, we worked closely with boutique interior design firm Samantha Eades. Sam and her team had a strong idea of the direction of the interior from the get go, so the brand needed to reflect this. Both the brand and interior design was created to embody the spirit of “Mr Brown” himself. Mr Brown is 38 years old; By day, a banker, by weekend, a camper. He wears plaid, jeans and RM Williams ... or a suit. He is a carnivore who loves a good beer. Earthy, yet refined.

The first step in our process was to develop a moodboard that depicted this…

From here, we explored a range of designs which incapsulated this look and feel. We developed a diverse collection of strong, authentic logo concepts that could be used to visually identify “Mr Brown”.

We all agreed the signature style concept best portrayed the Mr Brown persona. However, it didn’t feel quite right. Thinking it may have been slightly feminine, (drawn by the hands of a female designer), we tasked a range of male acquaintances with scrawling the name “Mr Brown” in their own handwriting.

What We Made

It is from these scribbles that we refined what became the final Mr Brown logo and custom typeface.

We continued to work with James and the Mr Brown team to develop all the elements needed for the restaurant launch.
